More than a month into the Major League Baseball season and the divisional races are starting to heat up. With a full slate of games scheduled this weekend, we examine five series with the Rangers and Astros highlighting the list. Note that all information is for games played through May 6.
Texas Rangers versus Houston Astros
The Texas Rangers face the Houston Astros in a AL West show down. The Rangers are 16-16, but just 4-9 on the road. The Astros are 21-14 and 11-3 at home. Both teams are “burning hot” on the Team Strength Oscillator and Houston holds a +23 to +15 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator. If considering betting the “over/under”, it’s best to avoid as the teams are trending in different directions according to the Totals Predictor. Houston is +10 on the Team Volatility Oscillator, making them one of the most stable teams in the league. Of the six scheduled starters this weekend, only Gerrit Cole and Collin McHugh for the Astros have been profitable according to the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. Look for the Astros to win the series, taking two of three from their in state and divisional rivals.
Washington Nationals versus Los Angeles Dodgers
Washington is 14-20 on the season and 3-7 over their last ten game, leading to an “ice cold down” status and +6 on the Power Ranking Indicator. The Dodgers sit on top of the NL West at 23-14, 7-3 over their last ten and +25 ranking. Best to avoid the “over/under” in this one as the Nationals are trending over and the Dodgers are trending under. Max Scherzer is at +1784 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator and has the edge in Saturday’s game over the Dodgers’ Walker Buehler. Neither Anibal Sanchez nor Kenta Maeda have been good bets in Friday’s match up, while Hyun-Jin Ryu has been slightly more profitable in Sunday’s game than Stephen Strasburg. The Dodgers should win the series, taking two of three.
Seattle Mariners versus Boston Red Sox
The Mariners are 3-7 over their last ten games after a hot start. They are 19-18 on the season and second in the AL West. The Red Sox are 17-19 and 6-4 over their last ten, third in the AL East. Boston holds a +15 to +13 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average” versus “dead up” on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Red Sox have been unstable, at -4 on the Team Volatility Oscillator, so take their “favorite/underdog” status lightly when considering a bet. Both Eduardo Rodriguez and Rick Porcello have been excellent bets for the Red Sox and they are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Only Marco Gonzales at +579 has been profitable for the Mariners and he is slated to pitch on Sunday. If betting the “over/under”, it’s safe to go the “over”. The Red Sox should take two of three to inch closer to the .500 mark for the season.
Atlanta Braves versus Arizona Diamondbacks
Atlanta is 18-17 and on the heels of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East. The Diamondbacks are 20-15, two games behind the Dodgers in the NL West. Arizona has a +25 to +20 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator, while the Braves are “burning hot” versus “average” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Zack Greinke is scheduled to start for the Diamondbacks on Friday and has been an excellent bet at +2870 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator. Max Fried has the edge for the Braves on Saturday over Merrill Kelly and Mike Foltynewicz takes the mound on Sunday for the Braves. Both teams are playing games trending “over” on the “over/under”, so bet the “over” in this series. Arizona has the edge at home, but if you want to take a slightly risky play, go for the Braves to upset, winning two of three.
Cincinnati Reds versus San Francisco Giants
Both teams are 15-20 and last in their respective divisions. The Giants are +6 on the Power Ranking Indicator and “average down”, while the Reds are +3 and “average” in those two categories. Consider betting the “over” in games in this series, since both teams are playing in games trending “over” on the “over/under”. The worst bet of the series is on Jeff Samardzija for the Giants on Friday at -3870 on the Pitcher Profit Oscillator and the best bet is on Anthony DeSelafani for the Reds at +432 on Saturday. In a bit of a toss-up series, give the edge to the Giants to win the series two to win, taking Sunday’s finale with Madison Bumgarner on the mound.
