The 2019-2020 NBA season tips off this week and there are several interesting matchups for Friday, October 25. The Toronto Raptors, looking to defend their title, head to Boston to take on the Celtics in the featured game.
Toronto Raptors versus Boston Celtics
The Raptors head into this season looking to defend their first NBA title but will have to do so without Kawhi Leonard, who signed with the Clippers in the offseason. They head to Boston to face the new-look Celtics, who finished third in the Atlantic Division last season. Boston has a +26 to +15 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” versus “average down” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Last season both teams showed great stability according to the Team Volatility Oscillator. Best to avoid the over/under in this game as the teams are trending on opposite sides of the line. Last season the teams split the four meetings, each winning both at home. Look for much of the same in this one. Boston should have enough to prevail on their home court.
Phoenix Suns versus Denver Nuggets
Phoenix had the worst record in the league last season, winning just 19 games. They head to Denver to take on a Nuggets team that was second in the Western Conference. Winners of both meetings between the teams last season, the Nuggets are “burning hot” and +25 on the Team Strength Oscillator. The Suns are +16 and “ice cold down”. Both teams performed consistently last season according to their favorite/underdog status, so pay close attention to that information for this game. The best play is to be the over since both teams are trending on that side of the line according to the Totals Predictor. There’s very little indication that the Suns can effectively compete for a win here. Look for the Nuggets to win by double digits.
Dallas Mavericks versus New Orleans Pelicans
Last season these two teams finished at the bottom of the Southwest Division. New Orleans won three of the four games between the teams and have a +26 to +7 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator and “burning hot” versus “average up” on the Team Strength Oscillator. Look for a high scoring game with both teams involved in games trending over the line. The +31 and +21 numbers on the Team Volatility Oscillator indicate good stability, therefore look closely at the favorite/underdog status for both teams. This game is much of a toss-up and likely will favor the Pelicans slightly on their home court. If you want to really take a gamble, go for the Mavericks in a tight upset. The safe play is to take New Orleans at home.
Portland Trailblazers versus Sacramento Kings
Portland is coming off a 53-win season, good for third in the Western Conference. The Kings were third in the Pacific Division but were four-games under .500. Portland has a narrow +6 to +5 edge on the Power Ranking Indicator and the Kings have “average up” versus “dead” status. Last season, Portland controlled head-to-head play, winning three of the four meetings. Certainly, look for many points to be scored in this one, so betting the “over” is a wise choice. According to the Team Volatility Oscillator, the teams were both very stable, so they are likely to perform close to their favorite/underdog status. Look for Portland to be a slight road favorite, although the line is not yet out for this game. Pick the Trailblazers to win in a game decided by six or fewer points.
Utah Jazz versus Los Angeles Lakers
Utah won 50 games last season and the Lakers won 37. However, the Lakers have significantly upgraded with the addition of Anthony Davis to go along with a healthy LeBron James. The teams split the four games last season and the Lakers come in ith a +23 to +8 advantage on the Power Ranking Indicator with “average” versus “dead” status. According to the Totals Predictor, the teams are trending on opposite sides of the line, making betting the over/under a more risky proposition. Utah was decidedly more stable last season, so perhaps pay closer attention to their favorite/underdog status. Look for the Lakers to get off to a good start this season, securing home court and winning this game.
